Better Than All: Semifinals, Joe Bass (UWr MiracleBlade) vs. Taylor Scott (RUG Delver)
Joe has already improved on his SCG Dallas Open top 8 by making it this far, but he’s looking for more. Can he take out his opponent this round, RUG Delver, and finish the tournament in style?
Taylor had the play, but he also had to mulligan. As he explained:
“That had was keepable against so many decks… but not yours.”
Taylor led with a fetchland and Tropical Island, which produced Delver of Secrets. Joe used Swords to Plowshares on the troublesome scientist before it could cause too much trouble. Taylor cast Brainstorm and… missed his second land drop. Uh oh. This could be over quickly.
Joe played land go and Taylor cast Delver of Secrets. Joe landed Counterbalance after he Spell Pierced Taylor’s Force of Will to try to counter the Cold Snap enchantment. Delver flipped to Spell Pierce and he began attacking his miracles opponent. Joe cast Sensei’s Divining Top as well, to complete the mortal lock.
Joe doesn’t need a miracle… but he’d take one!
Joe 1, Taylor 0.
Taylor led with Scalding Tarn for Volcanic Island, which cast Ponder. Joe led with basic Island. Taylor went for Ponder, which got Spell Pierce for its trouble. Taylor fetched out Tropical Island and landed Nimble Mongoose, then passed. Joe cast Brainstorm, activated Flooded Strand, and found Tundra before passing back. Not nearly the blowout start as last game, they looked to be settling in for a long haul.
Nimble Mongoose pecked at Joe, and after Taylor cast Delver of Secrets Joe turned it into a farmer with Swords to Plowshares. He added Vendilion Clique in his upkeep targeting Taylor, who then attempted Lightning Bolt. Joe removed Detention Sphere to Force to counter the Bolt, but Taylor had another Lightning Bolt. Clique trigger revealed a pair of Stifles, which Taylor kept. In his next draw step, Joe attempted to miracle Terminus… but of course Taylor Stifled it. After a brief judge call, they figured out that Terminus can’t still be triggered off of Brainstorm in response. Joe cast Sensei’s Divining Top and passed.
Taylor has been Dazing opponents all day!
Taylor attacked for three and Joe fell to 11. Joe found his fourth land for Supreme Verdict, which didn’t get countered. Taylor didn’t have another creature, so when Joe cast Jace, the Mind Sculptor on his next turn things were looking grim. Things got grimmer when he used the +2 ability and allowed Taylor to keep.
Several more turns happened of course between the Jace resolving and the end of the game, but none really mattered. Eventually, Jace buried Taylor under an avalanche of Brainstorms and fateseals. Taylor made a fun play, Stifle-ing Jace’s -12 (and trading Forces back and forth) but Jace exiled Taylor’s library to close it out.
Joe 2, Taylor 0.
