Daze for Days: Round 7, Simon Christie (RUG Delver) vs. Tom Hester (Elves)
Tom and Simon actually played yesterday… in round one! “Today I know what all the cards do,” said Simon. “Yeah, no Detention Spheres today,” replied Tom.
“Let me guess… RUG Delver.”
Indeed Simon was on the RUG plan and used his land to cast Nimble Mongoose. Tom started things off with Birchlore Ranger, but it got Daze to the brain. Simon played Ponder off a Volcanic Island and attacked for one. Tom added Savannah to his Forest on board and used his mana to Green Sun’s Zenith for one, but that got Dazed as well. Playing his Tropical Island again, Simon Thought Scour’d himself to grow the Mongoose to Nessian Courser size and attacked. Tom tapped out for Mirror Entity, which simon picked up to read.
“I thought you knew what all the cards did!”
“I just like to be sure.”
In came the Odyssey uncommon, and Lightning Bolt took out the Shapeshifter. Green Sun’s Zenith for one was Tom’s next play, which resolved and searched for Heritage Druid. Simon drew for turn and played Wasteland, then attacked Tom to 9. Wasteland took out Savannah and then Simon cast Fire // Ice, splitting damage between Tom and his Druid. Tom cast Llanowar Elves and Quirion Ranger, taking a damage from Horizon Canopy in the process and going to 7. He untapped and replayed his Forest before passing. Mongoose continued to stomp all over Tom, who went to 4, and then Tarmogoyf also joined the fray.
Simon has got the stuff to take this match!
Tom then went for the gusto: Glimpse of Nature. Llanowar Elf tap landed Quirion Ranger, then Ranger number one untapped the Elves and refreshed the Forest. Nettle Sentinel came down as well, then he cast Crop Rotation. Horizon Canopy went to the dustbin in order to grab Gaea’s Cradle. The Cradle added four mana to aid in playing Birchlore Rangers, then that in concert with Nettle Sentinel set off the chain reaction: Priest of Titania, Heritage Druid, Nettle Sentinel, Wirewood Symbiote, Regal Force (drawing eleven, plus one for Glimpse), Heritage Druid, Llanowar Elves, Nettle Sentinel, Mirror Entity, Fyndhorn Elves, Wirewood Symbiote, Elvish Visionary, Wirewood Symbiote, Priest of Titania, Fyndhorn Elves, Nettle Sentinel.
Tom believes in little green men!
Mirror Entity pumped his team for 20 (!) and Simon scooped up his cards.
Tom 1, Simon 0.
“He’s no Delver.”
“He is Nimble as hell though!”
Windswept Heath sacrificed itself for the cause to get Savannah, which was not used on turn one for anything. What? How often does that happen? Volcanic Island and Brainstorm was Simon’s next play, then Nimble Mongoose pecked a point away from Tom. Another Heath found another Savannah for Tom, who had the relatively slow turn two play of Elvish Visionary. Daze took the legs out from under the Shards of Alara common, and on Simon’s turn he dropped Tom to 16. Scalding Tarn found Volcanic Island and then cast Tarmogoyf, which was a 3/4 at the time.
Tom went for Elvish Visionary, which resolved, then also cast Wirewood Symbiote, which also resolved. Another Volcanic cast Brainstorm and Simon also cast Forked Bolt, which dealt one to each Symbiote and Visionary, or rather would have had it not gotten bounced by the Insect’s ability. ‘Goyf grew a size that day, and Tom took 5 to go to 11. Tom played Gaea’s Cradle (with no creatures on board) as land number four, then recast Elvish Visionary while also attempting Nettle Sentinel.
“Here comes a Force of Will.”
“It’s a Willsenskraft, actually.”
Simon’s deck was full of misprints and German cards, so this was not out of the norm. More importantly, he got to threshold. Einode (Wasteland) destroyed Cradle, and Wendiger Mungo (Mongoose) and a Russian Tarmogoyf (no letters on my keyboard for that) crashed in and dropped Tom to 5.
And the Glimpse of Nature happened. Will this be a repeat of Game 1?
Heritage Druid drew a card, then in response to Nettle Sentinel (after Tom tapped out) Simon Submerged the Heritage Druid to throw a wrench in the works. The engine grinded to a halt, and Tom passed the turn. The green beatsticks rumbled in for Simon, and Visionary chumped ‘Goyf to drop Tom to 1. Mungo number two for Simon was his last card in hand, and he passed.
Tom recast Heritage Druid and Green Sun’s Zenith for one, finding Nettle Sentinel. Then he cast Heritage Druid, Nettle Sentinel and Regal Force, which drew six cards. After his 5/5 Tidings plus one resolved, he played Forest and Birchlore Rangers, then used the trio of Elves to play Fyndhorn Elves, Wirewood Symbiote, and Mirror Entity. Quirion Ranger returned Llanowar Elves and recast it to add more mana from the Nettle Sentinels doing their thing, but then he passed. Nice turn! But could he survive?
Tom 1, Simon 1.
“Good luck too you… you cheating bastard with the Lightning Bolt!” said Tom in jest.
Tom led with fetchland, Savannah… Meekstone?! Force of Will removed Submerge to stop the hate, and Misty Rainforest into Volcanic Island into Delver of Secrets put a clock on board. Tom played another Savannah and passed. Simon put the Delver trigger on the stack and cast Brainstorm to guarantee a flip, which came at the behest of Lightning Bolt. Volcanic number two also came down, and Insectile Aberration dropped Tom to 16. A second Delver of Secrets also hit play after attackers. Tom was facing down a whole lot of power, considering the Brainstorm last turn. Tom tried to Green Sun’s Zenith for two, but it got hit by a backbreaking (and misprinted) Daze. Delver flipped to Submerge (Untertauchen) and Tom went to 10. Then Simon further sculpted his hand with Ponder and passed.
Simon 2, Tom 1.
