Dread Not: Quarterfinals: Taylor Scott (RUG Delver) vs. Dustin Buckingham (DreadStill)
We met Tayler yesterday when he decided to bring his ‘Gnawsome’ deck to the Standard Open. Today he’s decidedly less exciting in his deck choice, but Dustin is more than making up for that with his U/R DreadStill list. Can the 12/12 trampler make an appearance before Scott’s one mana army overtakes him?
“This looks like a bad matchup for me.”
“Well, I certainly hope so!”
After Dustin mulliganed to four (“gotta have lands to play Magic, bud”), Tayler had the play and led with Misty Rainforest into Volcanic Island and Delver of Secrets, a potent play against an opponent with a full opening grip let alone one who cast Three Tragedies on himself. Dustin led with Volcanic Island and passed. The beats kept on coming when Delver blind flipped to a Stifle. Dustin cast an end of turn Brainstorm, presumably to find land, and when he untapped he played another Volc and cast Delver of Secrets of his own.
Taylor cast Lightning Bolt targeting Dustin’s 1/1, and Insectile Aberration set Dustin to 14. Dustin drew and passed. Tyler cast Ponder with a freshly played Scalding Tarn in play and passed after attacking. Dustin successfully landed Torpor Orb on his turn and also played Mishra’s Factory, but that didn’t stop Taylor’s 3/2 from crashing in any more than before. A second Delver of Secrets for Taylor was countered by Force of Will removing Spell Snare. After Dustin untapped, he cast Brainstorm and attacked with Mishra’s Factory (having activated the second he had just played). In came Aberration again, and after Taylor Forced Dustin’s Brainstorm it was quickly over.
Taylor 1, Dustin 0.
Taylor is ready to cast Brainstorm a lot!
Dustin led with Island and Delver of Secrets, which was answered by Vocanic Island and Delver on the other side of the table. Volcanic Island and Standstill was Dustin’s play, but Taylor had the Daze. Taylor’s Delver didn’t flip either and the Wandering Ones dealt damage. Taylor cast Ponder on his second main phase. Dustin flipped his Delver with Red Elemental Blast and dropped Taylor to 16. He then sent his REB at the Delver opposite him and cast Grim Lavamancer. Taylor drew and played Wasteland, killing an opposing Volcanic Island. He also cast Pyroblast to kill Insectile Aberration. Dustin attacked for one and cast Standstill, which got cracked on Taylor’s next turn by his Nimble Mongoose off Tropical Island.
Dustin untapped with a hand full of cards (a welcome change from the last game). Grim Lavamancer activated and dealt Taylor two damage to try to shrink potential Tarmogoyfs by removing both Standstills. Taylor Brainstormed and cracked a fetchland so as to grow his Nimble Mongoose and attack for three. Tarmogoyf got Spell Snare’d and he passed. Dustin Brainstormed as well on his turn, then attacked with Grim Lavamancer and playing Mishra’s Factory before passing. Mongoose chomped at Dustin again before Taylor passed right back.
Dustin attacked with Mishra’s Factory and Taylor attacked with Mongoose to set life at 9 apiece. Dustin did not attack with Factory, planning to block the Mongoose, but Taylor Stifled the pump ability from the Factory. Dustin Brainstormed to see if he could prevent that from happening, but it resolved and the 3/3 ate the 2/2 manland. Dustin untapped and cast a second Grim Lavamancer then attacked with the first one, dropping Taylor to 8. Mongoose got chump blocked by the Torment Wizard, and he then cast Ponder. Taylor floated a red in response to a Wasteland taking out his Volcanic Island in case he drew a Bolt of some kind, and failing to find anything interesting on top of his library he shuffled from Ponder. Taylor added a new Volc to the board and passed.
Dustin drew and played Mishra’s Factory and and passed. Taylor attacked with the ‘Goose and set Dustin to 6, then added another ‘Goose to his team. Dustin activated Grim Lavamancer to drop Taylor to 6 as well. Dustin activated a fresh fetchland but Taylor Stifled those plans. Dustin cast Phyrexian Dreadnought, which resolved, and Stifle, which got Pyroblasted. Daze countered the ‘Blast and the 12/12 resolved, threatening to throw the game drastically in Dustin’s favor. The pair of ‘Geese swung in anyway, and Grim Lavamancer activated right before it died to throw pieces of Dustin’s graveyard at Taylor’s face. The 12/12 trampler was more than enough to kill Taylor though, and the guys headed to game 3.
Dustin hopes his opponents are Dreading his matchup!
Taylor 1, Dustin 1.
“I forgot that thing has trample.”
“That’s okay. I forgot that Nimble Mongoose has shroud even without threshold!”
Taylor was very surprised by the Mirage rare’s keyworded ability:
“Did you know that Phyrexian Dreadnought has trample for the low, low cost of one mana? What a bargain!”
Taylor led off the festivities for the final game with a snap keep and Nimble Mongoose off of Tropical Island (that came in thanks to Misty Rainforest), but Dustin Forced it removing Delver of Secrets. Dustin was more reserved, having to mulligan to six, but once he kept he played Grim Lavamancer off Volcanic Island. Taylor fetched again, getting his red source, and he landed a Nimble Mongoose for real this time.
“…Vexing Devil, you mean?”
Dustin added Grim Lavamancer number two, which received Lightning Bolt before the end of the turn. Nimble Mongoose attacked for one, and Taylor passed. Dustin cast Brainstorm off his Island and passed without a land drop. Taylor targeted Bolt at the second Grim Lavamancer, and it hit Taylor for two before he Submerged it back to his own library. Mongoose chipped away and Taylor passed. Clearly surprised by what he drew, Grim Lavamancer came down for Dustin.
Misty Rainforest found Volcanic Island and used it to attempt Tarmogoyf, to which Dustin responded by cracking Scalding Tarn (which he played last turn). The (currently) 3/4 resolved and Dustin untapped, and when he did he cast Brainstorm again. Tarmogoyf got Submerged, but not before Spell Pierce tapped out Dustin. The ‘Goyf came down again, and Mongoose (now a 3/3) dropped Dustin to 13. Dustin drew and passed. The 3/3 and 3/4 turned sideways, and Dustin went to 7. Grim Lavamancer activated to drop Taylor to 12 at end of turn. But he had nothing on his turn, so he just passed.
Taylor 2, Dustin 1.
