It's a Miracle: Sam Barth (Bant Control) vs Jeff Moseley (Naya Miracles)
Match covered and article written by Tannon Grace
In this top 8 match we have two local players facing off, both coming from the same store in Baton Rouge. Sam, a 17 year old up and comer, has been on a tear lately with a PTQ win and a States top 8. Jeff is a very solid player is his own right, looking to use this weekend as a start for future success.
After Jeff mulled down to 6 cards we had Sam starting us off with a new Return to Ravnica land coming into play tapped. Jeff played his own duel land untapped, allowing him to play a turn 1 pilgrim. After Sam had nothing but another tapped land on two, Jeff attacked with his pilgrim and cast a Farseek, getting way ahead on mana. The top of Sam’s deck revealed what was sure to be the first of many miracles of the match, casting Terminus to bin the Pilgrim.
Jeff is ready for a miracle!
Jeff, looking to apply some pressure, played a Huntmaster+of+the+Fells on his turn. Sam answered the Huntmaster with a Detention+Sphere. Not to be out-miracled, Jeff cast a bonfire from the top of his deck for 3. After an attack from Jeff’s wolf token Sam was down to 14 life. Sam missed a land drop on his turn but cast a farseek to make sure he could keep up with the Naya deck. After another attack for 2 Jeff passed the turn to Sam, who found the land he was missing and used it to cast a Garruk%2C+Primal+Hunter. Making a Beast and outclassing the Wolf token. Jeff used his mana to cast an Restoration+Angel at the end of Sams turn and sending the angel in brought the planeswalker down to 1 loyalty. Jeff then cast Entreat+the+Angels for 1 and passed the turn, putting the Bant player in a bad spot.
On his turn Sam drew his much needed sixth land and cast a Terminus, clearing the board and making some breathing room. Jeff then miracled another Bonfire of the Dammned, bringing Sam down to a dangerous 5. Thragtusk was just what the doctor ordered for Sam. Which was answered by Jeff playing a Thragtusk of his own. Sam then used the -3 ability, killing off his Garruk, to draw 5 cards. Blowing this game wide open. A turn later same miracles Entreat the angels for 6 tokens. Jeff tapped the top of his deck, hoping to not be out-miracled… it was a land.
“Alright, lets go to the next game," Jeff said reaching for his sideboard.
Sam isn't discounting his Jaces to take him all the way!
Sam 1, Jeff 0.
Game 2 saw Jeff going down to 6 again. Jeff played an early Pilgrim on turn two. Sam had no land drop on turn 3 or turn 4. Jeff plays a Thragtusk, trying to make this a fast game in his favor. Sam finally finds a land but still has no play before shipping the turn. After taking an attack from the Thragtusk, Sam cast a miracle Terminus on his turn. Jeff started to us his mana to activate his Gavony+Township, making his Beast token a real threat. After Sam is forced to chump block the token with a Snap Caster, he finally draws a fifth land and plays a Thragtusk of his own.
Jeff flashed in an Restoration+Angel at the end of Sam’s turn. Jeff then attacked with his Beast token and angel, trading his token with Sam’s Thragtusk. After combat Jeff cast a Bonfire for 3, bringing Sam to 3 and killing his token. Sam untaps, looking to get back in the game, casts Entreat+the+Angels from his hand for 2. Jeff mounts a offensive by casting a Garruck, Primal Hunter, but that is soon taken care of by Sam’s Angel tokens.
After Jeff has nothing on his turn to keep the offenses going Sam landed a Jace, Architect of WIll on his turn. After two turns of using Jace’s -2 ability, Sam found another Entreat+the+Angels. After Jeff’s draw phase yielded nothing to answer the swarm of tokens he extended the hand to Sam.
Sam Barth miracles his way into the Star City Games New Orleans top 4!
Sam 2, Jeff 0.
