Lost in the Maze: Round 6, Zak Whyte (Maverick) vs. Patrick Crowe (RUG Delver)
Anyone who knows me knows I love me some Maverick… and don’t have the best relationship with Delver of Secrets. Can the sheriff in town take care of the RUG menace?
“You’re not playing your own deck, are you?”
“I am not… but my deck is just as pimp.”
He then cast Japanese Mother of Runes and passed. Patrick blind-flipped Delver to Ponder and attacked Zak to 16 before casting that Ponder after combat. He added a second Tropical Island and passed. Zak played an altered Wasteland to cast foil Thalia, Guardian of Thraben (the pimping beats continue) and passed. Insectile Aberration dropped Zak to 13. He then cast Nimble Mongoose and passed. So far he’d cast two commons and an uncommon, no foils, no Japanese, no nothin’. Just good old fashioned beats.
Zak White considers himself a Maverick!
“That’s an awful lot of land for a Delver deck.”
Delver kept on chipping away at Zak’s life total, dropping the Maverick player to 10. Tarmogoyf joins the board, a 2/3, and then Patrick passed. Zak attacked with his exalted first striker, but Patrick Lightning Bolted Mother of Runes before blockers. It resolved, and the now 3/4 Tarmogoyf ate the Dark Ascension legend. Zak rebuilt his board with Maze of Ith, Umezawa’s Jitte and another Mother of Runes. Patrick’s army crashed in, with the Tarmogoyf getting lost in the Maze on its way in. Life totals sat at 16-6. Zak attempted Knight of the Reliquary, but Force of Will took care of Brian Kibler’s leading lady.
Once again a pair of efficient RUG soldiers came into the red zone. Mother of Runes blocked ‘Goyf and gained protection from Green while Delver this time found its way into the Maze of Ith. Nimble Mongoose did not attack that turn. Gaddock Teeg came into play for Zak, who also equipped his Jitte to Mother of Runes. He found a Wasteland with Brainstorm, which took out the Maze of Ith precombat, and now all three members of Patrick’s team marched in. Mother declared block on Tarmogoyf while Gaddock Teeg stood in front of Nimble Mongoose. Mother got protection from green, and Patrick Stifled the Umezawa’s Jitte trigger. And even though the Stifle would be the seventh card in his graveyard, the ‘Goose died before it got there.
The Kithkin Advisor took up the Jitte mantle and rumbled into the red zone (as much as a Kithkin can rumble), picking up some Jitte counters along the way. Jitte took out the flipped Delver of Secrets on Patrick’s attack, and he passed. Patrick continued his road back by casting Knight of the Reliquary, which got Daze on its way in but could pay the Prophecy common’s tax. The 4/4 Knight picked up Jitte and an exalted trigger, which then set life totals at 7 for Patrick and Zak at 3.
Knight came in yet again but with counters on Jitte and a fetchland in play it represented lethal. Patrick chump blocked for a turn, but after Zak cast another Knight he gave up the ghost.
Zak 1, Patrick 0.
“Umezawa’s Jitte is dumb.”
The players discussed some tiebreaker math during sideboarding.
Patrick is all too happy to be Delving for Secrets today!
Patrick led off game 2 with Tropical Island and Ponder. Zak led with Forest and Noble hierarch, but that got Dazed. Patrick replayed his land and passed. A repeat of the first turn occurred again, and Hierarch hit the bricks. After Tropical Island entered play for the third time, Zak attempted Green Sun’s Zenith for 0, which received Force of Will. Zak added Maze of Ith post combat and passed. Patrick played Nimble Mongoose before ending his turn.
Zak found a land on top to cast Thalia, Guardian of Thraben on his next turn. Patrick did not have land number two, so he passed. When Zak went for Qasali Pridemage, Patrick paid the Thalia tax and Force of Will’d the cat. Patrick played Delver of Secrets but found no more mana. Zak threw Knight of the Reliquary on the board, and the 4/4 looked to end the game quickly. Thalia dropped Patrick to 14, and his flipped Delver (flipped to Dismember), but it got lost in the Maze just like last time.
Path to Exile removed the Insectile Aberration (allowing Patrick to search out a land but he failed to find). Knight and Thalia attacked Patrick to 8 and then Zak added Mother of Runes. Patrick finally found a land and he sacrificed his Misty Rainforest for Volcanic Island to cast both Nimble Mongoose and Dismember the Knight (paying 4 life) and went to 3. Zak cast Fauna Shaman and gave Thalia pro-Green to attack Patrick to 1. On Zak’s next turn he attacked with his Youthful Knight and Forest Bear, and unable to break the Mother of Runes seal of approval with his Lightning Bolt Patrick scooped up his cards.
Zak 2, Patrick 0.
